Total 911’s five favourite featherweight Porsche 911s
Compared to its competitors, the Porsche 911 has always favoured a lightweight approach. From the original 911R to the latest 991 GT3 RS, “adding lightness” (as Lotus founder, Colin Chapman once stated) is central to the neunelfer philosophy.
There have been many great lightweight Porsche 911s over the years so, picking our favourites proved a tough task. Only two cars were voted for by all three Total 911 team members.
Each featherweight Porsche 911 was scored (five points for first down to one point for fifth) with the highest score coming out on top. In the case of a tie, the car with the lightest base weight would win out. Here are the results:
5) Porsche 993 Carrera RS Clubsport – 1,279kg
It may not be the lightest Porsche 911 to ever wear the fabled Rennsport tag but, the 993 Carrera RS Clubsport is certainly one of the most dramatic thanks to its imposing aerokit. It still saved nearly 100kg over the standard 993 Carrera 2 too.
4) Porsche 993 GT2 – 1,290kg
Aided by the lack of rear seats, no four-wheel drive system and a number of motorsport homologation parts, the Porsche 993 GT2 remains the lightest twin-turbocharged 911 that Porsche has ever built.
3) Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS – 975kg
In M471 specification, the 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS is one of the lightest 911s ever made (bested on the scales only by the 911R and the Carrera 3.0 RS). Weighing in at under a tonne, the 2.7 RS was blessed with intoxicating dynamic performance
2) Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Clubsport – 1,160kg
The Eighties wasn’t blessed with a proper Rennsport 911 (the SC RS doesn’t really count, does it?). But, the 3.2 Carrera Clubsport saved 50kg over the standard car, came with a blueprinted flat six and wore the iconic red-over-white ‘Carrera’ stripes.
1) Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Leichtbau – 1,100kg
Porsche’s 964 Carrera 4 Leichtbau is possibly the craziest lightweight 911 that Weissach has ever made. After raiding the Paris-Dakar Rally parts bin and stripping the interior to the bare bones, Jürgen Barth’s team came up with a four-wheel drive 964 that was 120kg lighter than the already featherweight 964 Carrera RS.
