Peter Wheeler dies

Total 911 is sorry to report the death of ex-TVR boss, Peter Wheeler.

TVRs were, for a time, a competitor to Porsche, especially with rich city types. Indeed, Wheeler had a particular dislike for the 911.

Wheeler bought TVR in 1980 and transformed the company by producing some wild-looking cars, which he had more than a little input in styling. He even developed bespoke engines for the cars, which had previously been powered by Ford and Rover units.

In 2004, he sold TVR for £15-million and, perhaps because of his lack of input, the company failed to prosper.

Peter Wheeler was one of the motor industries most colourful characters and maybe one of the last of the breed of great British car makers.
