Porsche 919 Hybrid race numbers confirmed

As well as Weissach’s comprehensive involvement in the GTE classes, the biggest news ahead of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship is Porsche’s return to the LMP1 class with its new 919 Hybrid prototype.

At today’s FIA press conference in Paris it was confirmed that the two 919s would carry #14 and #20 for both the 2014 FIA WEC season and June’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. When combined, the two numbers confirm the importance of 2014 in Porsche’s motorsport history.

Porsche’s prototype driver line-up includes two of Audi’s 2010 Le Mans-winning squad. Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas will be split across the two cars, with Bernhard taking the wheel of #20, and Frenchman, Dumas piloting #14 in 2014.

How Porsche splits up the rest of its LMP1 squad has yet to be confirmed however, team manager, Andreas Seidl explained that separating Dumas and Bernhard was “an obvious choice… because of their special long-distance and Le Mans experience”.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid, entered under the ‘Porsche Team’ banner in 2014, is currently in Bahrain testing ahead of its public debut at the official FIA WEC pre-season test at Paul Ricard on 28-29 March.
