Having known Kelvin for around seven years, there has never been any doubt in my mind he’s a true petrolhead. It didn’t come as much of a surprise then when he told me early last year he had entered his first proper race series, the Mighty Mini championship.

Kelvin put in a solid performance throughout that season, including pole position for his first race, and numerous other podiums. For 2013 the opportunity came along for a drive in the GT3 Porsche Cup challenge and, needless to say, he jumped at the chance, fuelled by his passion for Porsche 911s.

Signing with Redline Racing, Emmerdale soap actor Kelvin decided to set himself the sensible goal of finishing third or higher in the championship. In reality, I knew he wanted to win deep down but, coming from standard road-spec Mini, a 400bhp GT3 was going to be a massive challenge.

Joining Kelvin at Silverstone for the final two races of the GT3 Porsche Cup Challenge, I watched a perfect finish to his debut Porsche campaign. After qualifying third on Saturday, Kelvin took to the final step of the podium in race one.

Better things were to come in the second encounter though, with Kevlin taking a breakthrough victory. The win guaranteed third place in the final championship standings. Such a good finish in his maiden year at the wheel of a 911 shows Kelvin’s as good with his racing lines as he is his stage lines.

Kelvin plans to continue his fledgling racing career next year, so when he’s not on your TV, keep an eye out for him leading the pack in the GT3 Cup Challenge next season.
