Video: Porsche 911 R – Old school, new thrill

Whether you think the new Porsche 911 R is the best thing since sliced bread, or a cynical marketing exercise pandering to car collectors, we can all agree that the R’s 4.0-litre flat six sounds epic is this quick flick from Porsche.

However, among a host of 911 R-themed videos on Zuffenhausen’s YouTube channel, this one stood out because it also saw a fairly substantial cameo from the new Neunelfer’s namesake, the original 911R.

While the 991 version does look and sound great on the French mountain pass that this video is filmed on, the original Renn-badged Porsche 911 sounds ever better, with its air-cooled 2.0-litre engine barking and burbling away with real menace.

Together, the 911R/991 R pairing would possibly be the perfect Porsche garage and, on some incredible Alpine rounds, we couldn’t think of anything better. For once, we’ll forget all the marketing guff and just focus on a superb video.

Which R-badged Porsche 911 would you rather have in your garage? The original 911R, or the latest 991 version? Join the debate in the comments below.
