Total 911’s first impressions of the Porsche 991 Carrera GTS

We’ve had some time to digest all the details of the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, and we’ve sat down to watch the video, so here are our first impressions of the latest 991 variant:

Lee Sibley, Total 911 Editor:

“Headline news is undoubtedly the manual gearbox; after the introduction of PDK-only 911 Turbo and GT3 models last year, traditionalists will be thrilled at Zuffenhausen’s decision to offer gear changes at the throw of an arm rather than the uninvolving flick of a fingertip.

“Mated to a mechanical LSD in rear-driven C2 GTS form and utilising the impressive Powerkit for 430hp, this is the fastest, purist 991 straight out the box (there’s no Powerkit on similarly-specced UK Anniversary 991s remember), which means it’s welcome news for Porsche 911 fanatics.”

Josh Barnett, Total 911 Senior Staff Writer:

“We’d known the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS had been coming for some time (with our last round of spy shots appearing back in May). However, I’m still blown away by Zuffenhausen’s latest release. It looks gorgeous, especially in the Carmine Red launch hue.

“The muscular looks are matched by equally potent performance, with the rear-drive layout and promise of a manual gearbox especially exciting. The Turbo S’s wheels look even better in matte black, and I love the black decklid grill with its 2.7 RS vibe. This could be my favourite Porsche 991 yet…”

Steve Mumby, Total 911 Senior Designer:

“The first thing that hits me about the new Porsche 991 Carrera GTS is how perfectly poised it looks. The wider body really suits this generation of the 911 and, coupled with the subtle cosmetic changes, really give the GTS a presence that the rest of the Carrera range just can’t touch.

“The technical specifications aren’t shy either, bridging the gap between Carrera S and GT3 seamlessly. For my money, the GTS encapsulates what a 911 truly is: an understated grand tourer that still turns heads.”
