Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge stopped for 2014

Porsche Cars GB has confirmed the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge GB will not run in 2014.

Created to offer a stepping stone for drivers to eventually graduate into the esteemed Carrera Cup, Porsche GB has decided to axe the championship as it looks to concentrate solely on the new Type 991 cars in next year’s Carrera Cup competition, as well as the support race for Le Mans 2014.

Marion Barnaby, Motor Sport manager at Porsche Cars GB, says the decision to halt the GT3 Cup challenge was not taken lightly: “However, we are now concentrating on new projects for 2014 with the introduction of the new 991-model 911 GT3 Cup into the Carrera Cup GB and the very high-profile support race at the Le Mans 24-hours.”

The series has seen a succession of drivers alleviated into the Carrera Cup, and at least two of the leading GT3 Cup Challenge contenders from 2013 are now finalising plans to step up to the Carrera Cup GB in 2014.

Previously championship-registered 911 GT3 Cup cars and drivers will still be allowed to compete in the Le Mans 24-hours support race in 2014.

Total 911 will bring you more on this story soon…
