Yes, it’s not a 911, but it has amazed the Total 911 team here in Frankfurt. In a show of its technical prowess, Zuffenhausen has announced the new Porsche 918 Spyder has become the first production homologated road car to lap the Nuburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes.

The hybrid hypercar, released to the public today at the 2013 IAA, lapped the 12.93 miles of the ‘Green Hell’ in 6m57s with factory driver, Marc Lieb at the wheel.

Announced to the world’s press by Porsche AG, Matthias Müller, and Stuttgart legend, Walter Rohrl, the incredible lap time sent typically teutonic applause around the Frankfurt arena.

The 918 Spyder combines a 4.6 litre V8, turning out 608bhp, with a set of 286bhp-producing electric motors. This hybrid technology allows the 918 to return 94mpg (3 litres/100km).

With up to 1280Nm of torque, the 1634kg hypercar reaches 62mph from a standstill in 2.8 seconds. The new age of hybrid machines has arrived. And the Porsche 918 Spyder has ensured it has arrived in style.

To celebrate the occasion, Porsche has released this video, providing a flavour of that momentous day at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. The McLaren P1 certainly has a lot to prove now the 918 Sypder has become the production car lap record holder at the Eifel mountains’ circuit.
