Young Brit Ben Barker heads for Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2013
Young British racing driver Ben Barker will be taking his talents to Porsche’s world stage for the 2013 season, after his Supercup unveiling for Dutch outfit Team Bleekemolen yesterday.
The move to Supercup means Barker will be stepping behind the wheel of Porsche’s latest 991-generation GT3 Cup car, complete with paddle shift for the first time. Speaking to the editor at Brands hatch in October (see the full interview on page 58 of issue 96) Barker underlined his desire to reach the world stage of the Supercup sooner rather than later, and the 21-year-old has wasted little time in ensuring his ambitions become reality. The move brings an end to Barker’s successful partnership with Kent-based Parr Motorsports in the Carrera Cup GB, though Parr frontman Paul Robe will continue to manage the youngster on the Supercup’s world stage.
Barker said at the launch in Amsterdam: “The Porsche Supercup was always the aim for 2013, especially after such a strong finish to 2012 in the UK. The Bleekemolen name is synonymous with Porsche competition and the team is already well established in the Supercup, so i’m looking forward to the next step in my sportscar career.”
Ben is expected to be one of two British drivers in this year’s Supercup, with fellow countryman Sean Edwards likely to renew his entry in the worldwide competition for another year.
Barker’s first taste of the new 991-generation GT3 Cup came at the inaugural 2013 testing session in Barcelona at the start of April, ahead of the season-opener in Catalunya on the 10-12th May.
