Porsche has announced it will field two new GT race cars based on the new 991 for the 2013 Le Mans 24 hour race and World Endurance Championship.

The move signals a return for the factory team to the famous Le Mans event for the first time since claiming overall victory in 1998. The two new Porsche 911 RSR race cars, which will contest the GTE category, will be run by Porsche AG Team Manthey.

Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport, said: “The new 911 RSR is currently being developed by our engineers and tested by our works drivers. What better time could there be to introduce the new car than in the 50th anniversary year of the Porsche 911.”

We couldn’t agree more with Herr Kristen’s comments: expect a full reveal of the 991 RSR on Total911.com soon.
