With all due respect, no list is complete without including the standard against which all sportscars are measured.

The first time I ever saw a 911 Turbo, my heart jumped up into my throat. I was instantly taken by the flared fenders, the huge rear spoiler, and the rear reflector with the PORSCHE lettering in it, not to mention the sound that it made. That was around 1976 and I was only 6 years old at the time, but it clearly left a mark on me.

The 911 GT2, GT3 RS, and the 997 C4S are more recent favorites of mine; but the 911 Turbo will ALWAYS hold a prominent spot in the garage of my mind.

I never met a 911 I didnt like.

Oh wait, scratch that - the 930 makes me wish I can travel back in time in a Dolorean and somehow erase the 930 from history and immediately replace the 911 with the 964. The 930 symbolizes all of the things wrong in that era. The 930 was the equivalent of what the BMW M3 was in the early 2000's

Is it a matter of taste?

.. I dont think so, I think its a matter of "generation". If you notice that the people that rant and rave about a particular model belong to that era. Its a part of their automotive heritage and shaped their 'automotive world view'.

I appreciate the nostalgic sentiment of this post. But, I challenged the statement: "911s are not for everyone" --> There is not one person I know that has ever driven a 911 and said: "I prefer a Corvette or the GTR"

(as for your list: its pretty freakin convincing) Though, its a toss for the Targa - the "Targa's" have always been a very interesting triumph of industrial automotive design. --> but will i choose it over a 964? ..hard to say; but probably not. the 964 is just a magical balance of the "old and the new".
