2014 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: Britain preview

Just two weeks after the disappointment of Austria, British Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup racer, Ben Barker has another chance at securing his maiden victory in the premier Porsche 911 race series this weekend as the championship visits Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

Barker qualified well at the Red Bull Ring but first-corner contact stymied his chances of pushing for a second podium of 2014. However, if ever there was time to put in a good performance, the British Grand Prix support race would be it.

Total 911’s Supercup columnist currently sits equal third in the points standings after an impressive start to his second season racing in the Supercup and the Oxford native will be hoping for a return to form in a circuit just 30 miles from his home.

Kuba Giermaziak has been the man to beat so far as VERVA Lechner enjoy a strong start to 2014.

VERVA Lechner teammate, and new championship leader, Kuba Giermaziak will be tough to beat after securing his second win in as many races in Austria however, the swathes of British supporters will no doubt help Barker rise to the occasion as he battles for the biggest crown in Porsche racing.

Philipp Eng will once again be strong, and looking to make up for the disappointment of Austria where a mechanical gremlin robbed the Austrian of a certain first victory of his short Supercup campaign.

The erstwhile championship leader has prior experience of the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit from his days racing in the now-defunct FIA F2 championship and will no doubt be straight on the pace in his 991 GT3 Cup car.

Fresh from a double Carrera Cup GB victory at Croft, Josh Webster will make his Supercup debut this weekend.

All three Porsche Juniors, Connor de Phillippi, Alex Riberas, and Sven Müller have impressed so far this year, with the trio looking to build on their solid start to the season with a standout result at Silverstone.

They will be joined on the grid by Total 911’s Carrera Cup GB columnist, Josh Webster with the 20-year-old racer gaining a wildcard entry into this weekend’s event in Britain. Webster has been going from strength to strength in the national races this year and will no doubt be one to watch.

Make sure you check out Total 911’s Twitter account on Friday as we will be at the circuit, cheering on Ben and Josh and bringing you a look behind the scenes in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup paddock.
